Community Snapshot: Chatham

Significant Projects

The Town is currently considering whether to pursue a small wind project at the Wastewater Treatment Plant under MTC's Large Onsite Renewables Initiative.

Energy Decision Makers

The town's website is available here.

Chatham does not appear to have an alternative energy committee, but does have a Department of Health and the Environment.  Dr. Robert Duncanson is the Director.

Energy Efficiency

The Cape Light Compact (CLC) tracks information on all its energy efficiency programs on a town-by-town basis. For Chatham, the Cape Light Compact efficiency report shows an annual kWh savings of 194,525 kWh in 2008 as a result of the various CLC energy efficiency programs.

Renewable Energy

The production data below is based on information from the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative (MTC) collected in support of Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs). RECs are tradable environmental commodities in the United States and represent proof that a specified amount of electricity was generated from an eligible renewable energy resource. Photovoltaic and wind energy producers that do not participate in the RECs program are not represented in the data.  The information is valid as of the end of 2007. The charts below show a growing amount of photovoltaic energy being produced within Chatham from an increasing number of sites.

As part of the Cape Light Compact's "Solarize our Schools!" campaign, a 2kW solar photovoltaic (PV) systems was installed at the Chatham Middle school. The solar panel at the school shows the daily, weekly, and monthly solar panel performance.

Wind Energy Production Wind

At the end of 2007, Chatham had no net metered wind energy production.

Municipal Wind Turbine

The Town of Chatham began working with MTC to explore the feasibility of developing a wind turbine project on municipally owned land. In November 2004.  The UMass Renewable Energy Research Laboratory conducted a Preliminary Site Analysis at locations chosen by the municipality to determine an appropriate site to explore feasibility.

The preliminary analysis indicated that Chatham has wind speeds high enough to warrant consideration of wind power. It also concluded that the installation of a temporary wind monitoring tower (“met tower”) would be a necessary next step. However, restrictions created by proximity to Chatham airport would probably limit any wind turbine at the site to less that 150 feet in height.

After the analysis was completed, the Town opted to place the project on hold. In October 2007, the Town resumed its exploration of the possibility of a wind project at the Wastewater Treatment Plant. However, review of the site by MTC's airspace consultant indicates that a potential wind project at this location would be severely limited by height restrictions imposed by the Federal Aviation Administration. The Town is currently considering whether to pursue a smaller wind project at the Wastewater Treatment Plant under MTC's Large Onsite Renewables Initiative. It is studying the options within the height limitations placed by proximity to the Chatham Airport.

The Chatham Harbormaster is looking at rooftop turbines. The Chatham schools are also looking at a wind turbine.  The town is in the design phase for new police department and annex buildings.  Options for both wind and geothermal energy are being considered.
