Electricity Consumption, Costs & Efficiency

Data and information developed through working group processes under the Cape & Islands Renewable Energy Collaborative will be used as a basis for developing this section.

Overall electricity consumption continues to grow along with costs, even though efficiency gains are being made in a number of sectors. Some consumption and cost data for Cape Cod developed for the "Cape Cod 2020: Sustainability Indicators Project" are available here (PDF).

Additional use, cost, and efficiency data are to be highlighted below:

Electricity Consumption

  • Overall Load Trends for Cape & Islands Region

Cape Cod

  • Annual Electricity Consumption by Class
  • Summer and Winter Peak Demand
  • Consumption by Town

Martha’s Vineyard

Current Fact

Dirty Roof

Conventional asphalt shingles are
the cheapest roofing material around but, as is usually the case, there is a cost: They are manufactured using petroleum by-products and, once they reach the end of their useful life, they must be landfilled as construction debris or “downcycled” as road materials or in other low-value uses.

Current Vision

Green Roof

Thatching represents an attractive and sustainable roofing solution. This thatched roof, gracing a barn in Yarmouthport, transforms an invasive wetland plant (Phragmites sp.) into a useful, biodegradable shelter.
