Green Power: Wind Energy Production

The table below on the right provides the annual wind energy production by town for those towns that had net metered wind producers during this time period. It also provides a link to each town's web page. The number of wind turbines on the Cape, Martha’s Vineyard, and Nantucket has been growing in recent years and is expected to increase dramatically in 2009 and 2010 with large municipal wind turbines. In 2007, the wind turbine at the Mass Maritime Academy produced nearly 1 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of green power - a harbinger of a carbon-free, energy-independent future! The table and map below provide the annual wind power production by town based on data from net-metered wind turbines reported to the state's tracking system.

  • Click on the markers on the map or the first column of the table in the row for the town to see graphs of the production history (in kWh) and the growing number of wind turbines in each town, as well as to access information on high-profile installations.  The total usage for the town is also shown (Cape & Vineyard data courtesy of NStar, Nantucket data courtesy of National Grid).
  • Click on the marker to see the totals for the Cape, Martha's Vineyard, and the entire region.
  • Click the name of the town in the table to see wind renewable energy items of interest for that town.
  • Click here to re-center the map.

This website is being developed through the Cape & Islands Renewable Energy Collaborative (CIRenew). Its framework was created under a community planning grant award from the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative (MTC). The Clearinghouse provides a central location for the collection, classification, and distribution of data, information, and tools addressing energy supply and use in the Cape & Islands region, both now and in the future.
